A Port Isabel guide says the Lower Laguna Madre fished consistently through the first half of October as mild fronts came through. Trout, redfish and snook led the catch, with a few flounder, all on topwaters and plastic worms. Live bait has been hard to come by, so plan on artificials. Early trout are on two-to-three-foot grass flats and the spoil islands along the ICW, then slide to the drop-offs and guts later in the day; most reds are in less than two feet of water.
Up at Port Mansfield, clean Gulf water is rolling in through the East Cut in the evenings and lifting the tides, and oversized reds are hanging around the jetties. Snook have been holding in a windblown cove by a steep ledge with a late-morning bite, trout over 25 inches are coming on most wade trips, and flounder are starting to show on ledges and small drains near the East Cut on the outgoing tide.
